Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Los Angeles, CA | Corona Chimney Sweep
We provide independent Gelco chimney cleaning and service across Los Angeles, from South LA bungalows to Wilshire corridor duplexes. The one thing that makes our Gelco work different here is simple: most LA fireplaces burn a handful of nights a year, so we’re not chasing heavy creosote. We’re clearing pigeon nests, crushed cap screens, seized dampers, and sagging liner joints that fail from months of disuse, not overuse. Call (855) 382-6159 for a service visit.
Why Los Angeles Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
We’ve pulled, reseated, and re-capped more Gelco components in Los Angeles than we can count, most of them on original 1920s and 1930s brick chimneys that were never updated with modern liners. That specific housing stock, the Spanish Colonial and Craftsman bungalows that dominate the 90030 through 90033 ZIPs, is where Gelco caps and dampers show up constantly. We know how they age here, what fails first, and what’s worth saving versus replacing.
Nolan Ferris, our owner, has spent over a decade inspecting flues across Southern California and learned the mechanical side of combustion systems through Norco College’s vocational program before narrowing his focus entirely to chimneys. He’s methodical about creosote classification, but in Los Angeles the real diagnostic work is structural: is the cap still venting, is the damper seating, are the liner joints intact. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, not authorized or sponsored by Gelco, which means our recommendations are based on what we see in the flue, not a brand directive. We stock genuine Gelco caps, dampers, and liner components for fast turnaround, and we repair what we find.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Los Angeles
- Crushed and packed cap screens. Gelco round and square cap screens get punched in by pigeon and squirrel activity on uncapped or under-capped flues all over the Wilshire corridor. Once the screen is bent, birds get inside and pack the cap solid with nesting material and soot. We clean the cap, replace the screen if the frame is sound, or fit a new Gelco cap if it’s not.
- Sagging stainless liner joints. On original unlined brick chimneys, we regularly find Gelco stainless flexible liners whose joints were never screwed or banded during installation. In South LA’s older bungalows, those sections pull apart inside the flue, the liner sags, and the fireplace or furnace drafts poorly. We reseat and band the joints or reline where the existing liner has failed.
- Rusted galvanized caps. A decade of dry-season sun and Santa Ana dust eats through the crown seam on galvanized Gelco caps. The rust then leaks into the flue on the rare winter rain we do get in Los Angeles. We replace those with stainless, which handles the basin’s dry, dusty air better.
- Seized top-mount dampers. Gelco top-mount damper gaskets dry out and seize from months of non-use. Los Angeles fireplaces sit idle from March through October, so the gasket sticks, the damper won’t seat, and the flue downdrafts on the first cool November night. We service or replace the gasket and get the damper seating clean again.
- Musty, downdraft-prone flues. In low-use Los Angeles fireplaces, the giveaway is a faint musty smell in the living room when the weather turns. That’s almost always a blocked or obstructed Gelco cap and flue, not creosote. A sweep clears the blockage and the smell goes with it.
Gelco Service in Los Angeles: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Because LA fireplaces burn a handful of nights a year, most Gelco-capped flues here fail at the screen and gasket, not from creosote buildup. A chimney in a Midwestern city accumulates creosote through a full winter of daily fires. A chimney in a 1920s Spanish Colonial off the Wilshire corridor or needing Gelco in Echo Park just sits there, month after month, while pigeons move in through a bent cap screen and the damper gasket bakes dry in the heat. The dry season makes a pre-winter sweep here more about clearing blockages and reseating components than fire safety from creosote, which is why a generic “annual sweep for creosote” pitch doesn’t match what Los Angeles chimneys actually need. We diagnose for what’s actually in the flue: nests, debris, failed screens, seized dampers, and sagging liner sections.
In one bungalow off the Wilshire corridor, a 1920s Spanish Colonial that still had its original brick flue, our tech opened a chimney fitted with a Gelco cap whose screen had been punched in by pigeons and packed with years of nests and soot-caked screen wire. We pulled the debris, found the stainless liner joints had never been banded so the section had sagged, and reseated them before fitting a new Gelco screen cap. The musty smell the owner had noticed on the first cool November night was gone within a day.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Los Angeles
We service Gelco stainless flexible relining kits in both single-wall and insulated configurations, Gelco round and square chimney caps including multi-flue caps for shared masonry chimneys, Gelco top-mount and side-mount dampers, and Gelco universal spark arrestors and cap screens. When a Gelco component needs replacing, we favor genuine Gelco parts where the fit matters, caps, dampers, and liner sections included. Where a quality aftermarket stainless part performs identically and costs the owner less, we’ll say so and use it. On an original unlined 1920s Los Angeles chimney, we’d rather reline than patch a failing Gelco liner in place, but a sound Gelco cap or damper stays and gets serviced. AfterGelco Service Pricing in Los Angeles
A Gelco chimney cleaning and inspection in Los Angeles typically runs between $180 and $340, depending on what we find once we’re in the flue. The cost difference is driven by condition: a simple cap screen clearing and sweep is on the lower end. A flue packed with years of pigeon nesting, a seized Gelco damper, or sagging liner joints that need reseating pushes the job higher because of the time and parts involved. A Level 2 inspection with camera documentation is included when the condition calls for it, and you get photo evidence of anything we recommend. We don’t quote repair work blind. Call (855) 382-6159 for a free estimate, and we’ll tell you what the flue actually needs before any work is booked.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Los Angeles
Sometimes, but not often. If the screen is bent but the frame is intact and the mesh isn’t torn, we can clean the nesting material out, straighten what’s salvageable, and resecure the cap. More often in Los Angeles, the screen has been punched in by pigeons or squirrels and the mesh is compromised, in which case you’re better off replacing it with a new Gelco stainless screen cap. We’ll show you the damage before you pay for anything. Call (855) 382-6159 and we’ll assess it on site.
It can, but only if the liner was installed correctly and the flue was properly sized. Most original 1920s brick chimneys in South LA were never built with a liner at all, so any Gelco stainless liner is an upgrade. The problem we see most often is joints that were never screwed or banded. If the liner is intact and correctly installed, it vents fine. If it’s sagging or the joints have pulled apart, you’re getting poor draft and a possible carbon monoxide backdraft, and that liner needs to be reseated or replaced. We’ll camera the flue and show you exactly what’s there.
Once a year is right for most homes, timed just before the first cool nights in November. Not because of creosote, the fireplaces in Los Angeles don’t burn enough to build that up. The reason is the off-season damage: cap screens get punched in, damper gaskets dry out, nests get built in places you can’t see from the ground. An annual check clears all of that before you light the first fire. If you can’t see daylight through the damper, we need to talk before you light that first fire of the season.
Because the flues under that cap are separate, and they almost never have equal blockage. One unit’s flue may be clear while the next one over is packed with nesting material or has a failed damper. We see this on mid-century Los Angeles apartment buildings and duplexes all the time, including properties needing Gelco service in Hollywood. A shared Gelco multi-flue cap can be intact while individual flues underneath it are in completely different condition. We camera each flue and tell you which unit has the problem. Call (855) 382-6159 to schedule a multi-flue inspection.
Almost always, yes, if the smell is coming from the chimney. That musty smell on the first cool November night in Los Angeles is the classic sign of a blocked flue: nests, debris, or a packed cap screen that’s been sitting in there for months. A sweep clears the blockage, and the smell goes with it. If the smell comes back, there’s a moisture issue higher up in the flue, and we’ll find it. For an exact quote on your chimney, call (855) 382-6159, estimates are free.
